For pipe smaller than about 0.75″, a permanent legible tag is often recommended instead of a standard pipe marker.
What Should Be Included on a Pipe Marker?
Size is only one part of the requirement.
A proper pipe marker should include:
- pipe contents
- flow direction arrow
- readable text
- proper color coding
- hazard details when needed

Pipe Marker Letter Height Requirements

As pipe diameter increases, the required letter height increases too. A small pipe may only need 0.5″ lettering, while a pipe over 10″ may need lettering at least 3.5″ tall.

- on both sides of wall, floor, or ceiling penetrations
- at regular intervals along straight pipe runs
